We Hope You Like This Song by Bree Housley

Bree Housley, a native of Walcott, Iowa, is the author of the 2012 book We Hope You Like This Song: An Overly Honest Story About Friendship, Death, and Mix Tapes.

The book–a tribute to her best friend Shelly who died at age 25 from pregnancy complications–arose from a yearlong blog Housley kept (along with her sister) in which she attempted to live like Shelly through weekly resolutions.

Asked to describe the book in three sentences, Housley responded in an interview in December 2012, [the book is] a tribute to friendship and all the ridiculousness that comes with it. It’s equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming, but never takes itself too seriously. By the time you finish it, you will have called no less than two people from your past to see what they’ve been up to in the last five years.

We Hope You Like This Song was voted ‘Book of the Year, Traditional Nonfiction’ by the Chicago Writer’s Association in 2013.
